About our cooling technology
Glacier Tek cooling vests are powered by PureTemp, a nontoxic, biodegradable phase change material that freezes at a cool, but not cold, 59°F. The cooling technology is completely harmless to people, animals and the environment.
Weighing about 4 pounds, the Glacier Tek cool vests are comfortable and easy to use. They can recharge in about 20 minutes in ice and water, one hour in a freezer and a few hours to overnight in the refrigerator. The packs will last up to 2½ hours in a 100°F environment.
Cooling technologies offered by competitors fall short in a variety of ways:
Some PCM products use old-style petroleum byproducts, like hexadecane, which are hazardous chemicals.
- Petroleum-based PCMs are not completely biodegradable and may take years or decades to decompose, leading to long-term effects on the environment
- Some paraffins, and other petroleum-based products, are carcinogenic and may be toxic to plants and wildlife
- Paraffins are derived from petroleum, which causes the price of the PCM to fluctuate based on the cost of crude oil
- Paraffins can contribute to an increase in carbon emissions
- Paraffins must be handled and disposed of according to hazardous material regulations in all 50 states and in most foreign countries
ICE AND GEL
Ice and gel pack PCMs are bulky, have a shorter cooling time and have the strong potential to sweat.
- A fully loaded vest with packs typically weighs between 9 and 11 pounds
- Since ice packs solidify at 32°F / 0°C, they can cause tissue damage with prolonged exposure to skin
- Stays cool for only a short time
- Will melt and produce condensation - leaving the wearer uncomfortably wet
Evaporative PCM technology relies on soaking the vest in water before putting it on, which can make the wearer uncomfortable after time.
- Will only work in warm, dry air
- Will not work in high humidity climates, which is severely limiting
- Can cause skin irritation, bacterial growth, mold and foul odor
- Will not work under any protective outerwear
Cooling the body keeps the mind focused.
Working in hot and confined environments can create heat stress - a dangerous condition that can cause slowed reaction times, reduced energy, and difficulties with attention. This results in reduced safety, decreased efficiency and an overall loss of productivity.
To help prevent heat stress, many personal cooling technologies have been developed for the workplace. These can range from spot coolers to fluid-chilled systems to passive ice vests.

To set the stage, we'll first give you a brief overview of how the body cools. You'll also learn how the lack of proper cooling can affect the body, as well as how to monitor your workplace for heat stress conditions.

Understand how the body cools.
About 90 percent of the body's heat is produced in the torso area by the major organs and muscle groups. The amount of heat generated is increased as the body works harder. In order to maintain a constant core temperature, the body must either give up or retain this heat as necessary. How this is accomplished depends greatly on the ambient temperature and humidity around you.
Convective body cooling.
Under normal conditions (60° to 80° F ambient temperature), the circulatory system carries core heat toward the skin's surface. Since heat always travels from hot to cold, rather than from cold to hot, the body heat is carried away as the cooler outside air passes over the skin. This process is known as convective cooling, since the heat is removed by the movement of air.
Evaporative body cooling.
As the temperature outside begins to rise, the difference between normal skin temperature (90° F) and the ambient temperature narrows. This difference is known as the delta T. As the ambient temperature rises above 80° F, the delta T is not great enough to allow the body's internal heat to flow away from the body by convection.
Instead, the body reacts by cooling itself through a process known as evaporative cooling. When water fluid is exposed to warm, dry air, it will evaporate into water vapor. This change of state is called a phase change and it produces a tremendous cooling effect. The body creates this phase change by secreting perspiration from our sweat glands to the surface of the skin.
When the air surrounding the skin is warm and dry, this is an extremely efficient process. But as the humidity rises, perspiration can no longer evaporate to water vapor, as the air is already saturated. This is a dangerous condition, since the body has no other natural mechanism to give up heat.
Vasoconstriction and the brain.
When the outside temperature drops below 60° F, the body needs to reverse the process and retain its internally generated heat. This is accomplished by a process called vasoconstriction. Vasoconstriction is the restriction of blood flow to the skin surface by contraction of blood vessels. Since the body's organs must always have a flow of blood, vasoconstriction is applied only to those vessels carrying heat to the skin's surface.
When the brain is fooled into thinking the temperature is cool - when ice is applied to the body, for example - vasoconstriction occurs in an effort to prevent loss of heat, even though the core temperature is actually rising. This can lead to dizziness and fainting. More dangerous is the fact that the cool skin temperature physiologically feels comfortable, so you may actually work harder, creating an even faster rise in core body temperature and the risk of cardiac arrest.

We have tried several different cooling vests and this worked best. We are purchasing a few at a time until all employees have one.
